Mozambique Conference Highlights Potential Growth of Expository Preaching in Portuguese-Speaking Africa

At the recent Fiel Conference in Nampula, Northern Mozambique, Pastor Leonardo Moraes, who works with EPW on training in expository preaching, had the opportunity to address a gathering of 515 delegates. This event, organised by Dr. Charles Woodrow of Grace Missions, reflected the growing interest in expository preaching within Portuguese-speaking Africa and the eagerness of these pastors to deepen their understanding of the Bible and enhance their preaching skills.

Leonardo, alongside Andrew Love from the UK, not only spoke to the attendees but also operated an EPW stand, where they showcased the transformative work EPW is doing. Their presence at the conference marked a significant step in spreading the influence of EPW’s mission to equip pastors with the tools necessary for impactful ministry.

Following the conference, Leonardo and Andrew conducted EPW’s fourth-year course, teaching 40 men the essentials of expository preaching through the story of Joseph. With the assistance of two Mozambican brothers, the participants were divided into small groups, where they learned to dissect biblical passages, identify the core message, and deliver mini-sermons to their peers. This hands-on approach honed their preaching skills and fostered a deeper understanding of scriptural interpretation.

The impact of EPW’s training is already rippling through the region. We have received reports of at least two Mozambican brothers independently using EPW materials to teach others, which is a testament to the programme’s effectiveness and reach. In this photo, you can see Nellio teaching the EPW course to his brothers in Mossurize, Mozambique, showing that the impact of our training conferences extends beyond those who can attend.

In another encouraging development, an Angolan pastor currently ministering in Maputo, Mozambique, has recently taught EPW courses in the Dondo region of Mozambique. With a network of contacts in Angola, he has expressed a willingness to help expand EPW’s influence by organising conferences in Angola. His colleague, Elias, who EPW sponsored to travel to Mozambique in May, is also prepared to contribute to these efforts.

This conference and subsequent training sessions highlight the growing momentum of expository preaching in Africa, empowering local pastors to interpret and teach God’s word faithfully. As EPW’s influence continues to expand, the future looks encouraging in spreading sound biblical teaching across Portuguese-speaking African nations.
